Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee – An Indian History of the American West is a book of history by Dee Brown. In it he describes the history of the American West from 1860 to 1890 from the point of view of the Native Americans. The book was a bestseller, it has been translated into at least 17 languages and sold millions of copies.
The book covers details of the history of expansionism from a point of view that is critical of the United States federal government’s years of forced relocations and warfare against the Native Americans. Brown makes a case that the actions of the federal government are part of a continuing effort to destroy the culture, beliefs and the way of life of the Native Americans. He gives a brief overview of the history leading up to the events, from the discovery and settlement of America starting in 1492 to the turmoil starting from the 1860’s. The Natives were generally peaceful and didn’t much resist early colonial efforts at Europeanization. When the influx of settlers kept growing exponentially and the colonists started to seize Native American lands, they started resisting. He describes the defeat of the Iroquis and Cherokee Nations and how the settlers encroached further and further on Native lands in order to achieve Manifest Destiny. |

Doris Alexander “Dee” Brown werd geboren op 29 februari 1908 en was een Amerikaanse geschiedkundige, bibliothecaris en schrijver van romans. Zijn bekendste boek is Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee dat voor het eerst werd uitgegeven in 1970.
Hij studeerde eerst aan het Arkansas State Teacher’s College waar hij als assistent hielp in de bibliotheek. Dit bracht hem op het idee om bibliothecaris te worden. Tijdens de Grote Depressie ging hij studeren aan de Universiteit van Washington. Na zijn studie vond hij een fulltime baan als bibliothecaris voor het U. S. Department of Agriculture, waar hij werkte van 1934 tot 1942. Hij schreef in die tijd zijn eerste boek, een satirisch verhaal dat nooit gepubliceerd werd over de bureaucratie van de New Deal. De uitgever suggereerde dat hij iets patriottistisch schreef. Toen schreef hij Wave High the Banner, een fictief verhaal over Davy Crockett. Kort hierna werd hij opgeroepen om in het leger te dienen, waar hij als bibliothecaris aan de slag ging tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tussen 1948 en 1972 was Brown werkzaam aan de Universiteit van Illinois. Hij haalde hier een master in bibliotheekwetenschappen, werd professor en voedde samen met zijn vrouw twee kinderen op. Hij schreef naast zijn werk en publiceerde tien boeken over geschiedenis en zes romans voordat hij bij het publiek bekend werd met Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. In 1973 ging Brown met pensioen, maar hij bleef nog wel schrijven. Hij schreef in zijn leven meer dan 30 boeken. Brown overleed op 12 december 2002 en werd 94 jaar oud. |
