Groom was born in Washington D.C., he was raised in Alabama where he attended a military school. He first wanted to become a lawyer just like his dad but later when he became an editor for his college he changed his ambition to becoming a writer. Groom also served the army from 1964 to 1969, he was also deployed in the Vietnam war in tour of duty. His book Forest Gump at first did not so good in terms of sales but when the movie came out it became his bestselling book making him a bestselling author and the movie received six academy awards.
