Korte samenvatting
Justine is the first book of The Alexandria Quartet written by Lawrence Durrell.

This is the tragic story of a mysterious and fascinating girl named Justine, and of those whose lives she touched in pre-war Alexandria. This story is told by Justine’s lover. He is a poor Irish teacher who has been looking for refuge across the Mediterranean in Greece.

There is no doubt about it that this is a love-story. But the real heroine of this book is definitely the setting where the story takes place: Alexandria. The city that decided that it’s women shall be the voluptuaries not of pleasure but of pain.

Over de auteur
Lawrence Durrell (1912, Jalandhar, British India – 1990, Sommières, France) was a British novelist, poet and travel writer.

Durrell was born in Jalandhar, British India. He is the eldest son of Indian-born British colonials Louisa (who was Anglo-Irish) and Lawrence Samuel Durrell, an engineer of English ancestry.

At the age of eleven, Durrell was sent to England, to go to school there.

He attended St. Olave’s Grammar School before being sent to St. Edmund’s School in Canterbury. Later he did not get in to college because he failed his entrance examinations.

He started writing poetry when he was fifteen years old. His first collection named Quaint Fragments was published in 1931. He was 19 years old at the time.

In 1935 was his first book published. In the same year Lawrence and his wife moved to Corfu. His mother and younger siblings moved there as well.

He wrote The Alexandria Quartet and The Avignon Quintet. These are both book series where he used many of the same techniques. In 1974 he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for the first novel in The Avignon Quintet series. The middle novel of this series was nominated for the 1982 Booker Prize.

Durrell was a bestselling author and one of the most celebrated writers in Great Britain.

Recensies
Observer: ‘One has no hesitation in acclaiming this as a great novel.’

The Times: ‘The writing is briljant in its clarity and briljant, too, is the poetic mind directing it. Justine is no ordinary novel. It holds great richness and great beauty.’
