1. The Talented Mr Ripley

Dickie’s wealthy father sends the talented Ripley to Italy to retrieve his son. Ripley is jealous of Dickie’s easy, fast-paced life. He tries everything to be like him and even ends up murdering him. His evil plan succeeds and therefore he impersonates Dickie from now on. At the same time however, he has to remain himself in front of the police. But he miraculously succeeds in this.

2. Ripley Under Ground

Professional criminal Tom Ripley now lives in France with his wealthy wife Heloise. He is the mastermind behind a lucrative painting scam. He makes himself elusive because of his genius improvisation skills. It is unfortunate that someone dies here and there, but unavoidable. New paintings by a deceased painter are sold in London. When one of the buyers gets suspicious, it’s up to Ripley to avoid running into the light.

3. Ripley’s game

Tom Ripley is insulted at a party by his neighbor Jonathan Trevanny, a leukemia-stricken framer. In revenge, the desperate Jonathan is gently brought to ruin by Ripley.

Ripley spreads the rumor that Jonathan is sicker than the doctor dares to tell him. Then he recommends Jonathan to an acquaintance as the right person for the murder of two members of the mafia. For the sake of financial security for his family, Jonathan goes into this deadly transaction.

4. The Boy Who Followed Ripley

Tom Ripley takes care of an unknown American boy: nineteen-year-old Billy Rollins. But is Billy who he says he is? Or is he perhaps Frank Pierson, the runaway heir to a food tycoon? And did Pierson senior drive off a cliff in his wheelchair under his own power, or was he pushed?

Ripley learns the truth, and soon he has young Billy completely under his control. Billy can do nothing but listen to him and do what he says. However, this has fatal consequences…

Highsmiths eerste boek, Strangers on a Train (Vreemden in de trein) uit 1950 werd drie keer verfilmd, door onder anderen Alfred Hitchcock in 1951.

Haar tweede boek, The Price of Salt, speelt zich af in het bekrompen Amerika van de jaren ’50. Een jonge vrouw die een relatie met een man heeft maar niet verliefd op hem is, wordt halsoverkop verliefd op Carol, een vrouw die in scheiding ligt. In de roman worden alle twijfels beschreven die deze gevoelens met zich brengen en alle obstakels die de vrouwen moeten overwinnen. Omdat Highsmiths uitgever niets zag in deze roman, liet Highsmith het onder een pseudoniem uitgeven bij een kleine uitgeverij. In 1991 verscheen het boek in een Nederlandse vertaling onder de titel Carol. De verfilming Carol uit 2015, geregisseerd door todd Haynes, met de actrices Cate Blanchett en Rooney Mara, werd bekroond op het Filmfestival van Cannes en ontving verschillende Oscarnominaties.

Tom Ripley

Tom Ripley is haar bekendste personage. Ze liet hem in totaal in vijf boeken opdraven. Het eerste boek waarin hij verscheen was The Talented Mr. Ripley. In 1960 werd dit boek verfilmd als Plein Soleil  met Alain Delon in de hoofdrol. In 1999 werd het boek nogmaals verfilmd met Matt Damon. Ripley’s Game werd eveneens twee keer verfilmd; in 1977 als Der Amerikanische Freund met Dennis Hopper in de hoofdrol en in 2002 nogmaals met John Malkovich in de hoofdrol. Ripley Under Ground is inmiddels ook verfilmd met dit keer Barry Pepper in de titelrol.

In totaal heeft Patricia Highsmith tweeëntwintig romans en zeven boeken met korte verhalen geschreven.
