Korte samenvatting
The Diamond Age tells the story of poor little Nell- an orphan girl adrift and alone in a future universe of neo-Victorian values and Confucian law, walk-in body alteration and nano-machines. But, not all alone. Nell had a friend, sort of. A teacher, a guide, an unarmed and armed combat instructor, a computer and a book and a matter compiler. The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer is all these things and so much more. Magical, illicit and dangerous, to begin with. And very desirable to a lot of powerful people…

Playing in 21st century Shanghai, this is a story of what happens when a high-functioning device falls into the hands of a street girl named Nell. The machine has the power to decrypt and program her life and the entire future of humanity.

Stephenson won prijzen voor ‘The Diamond Age’, ‘Cryptonomicon’, The Baroque Cycle’ en ‘Anatham’. Andere fictieboeken van Stephenson zijn bijvoorbeeld ‘The Big U’, ‘Zodiac’, ‘Snow Crash’(in het Nederlands ‘Het Babelvirus’) en ‘Interface’. In de categorie non-fictie schreef hij ‘Smiley’s People’, ‘In the Kingdom of Mao Bell’, ‘Mother Earth Mother Board’, Global Neighborhood Watch’ en ‘In the Beginning… was the Command Line’.

Recensies
Publishersweekly.com: “Stephenson’s fourth solo novel, set primarily in a far-future Shanghai at a time when nations have been superseded by enclaves of common cultures (“claves”), abundantly justifies the hype that surrounded Snow Crash, his first foray into science fiction. Here, the author avoids the major structural problem of that book-a long lump of philosophical digression-by melding myriad perspectives and cogitations into his tale, which is simultaneously SF, fantasy and a masterful political thriller.”
