Over de auteur

Ondanks het feit dat ze in de achttiende eeuw bekeerd waren tot het Protestantisme werd zijn familie toch slachtoffer van het anti-Joodse beleid van de Nazi’s, en in 1938 emigreerden ze naar de Verenigde Staten.

Stern studeerde aan de Columbia-universiteit in New York, waar hij van 1953 tot 1997 ook les zou geven. Hij was in 1993 en 1994 adviseur van Richard Holbrooke, de Amerikaanse ambassadeur naar Duitsland.

Zijn werk concentreerde zich op de complexe relaties tussen Duitsers en joden in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw en op de opkomst van het nationaalsocialisme in Duitsland in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw.

Het Fritz Stern-hoogleraarschap aan de Universiteit van Wrocław werd in 2009 ter ere van hem opgericht. De eerste voorzitter was de voormalige Duitse president Richard von Weizsäcker.

Stern overleed in 2016 op negentigjarige leeftijd.
